Early in 2008 the proprietors of our Village Post Office and Stores announced their intention to close the business. Having taken advice the parish council held a public meeting in May 2008 to discuss options for keeping the shop open. The majority were in favour of setting up a community shop with the support of The Plunkett Foundation, through its Community Owned Shop activity (formerly known as ViRSA). Under this scheme ViRSA would give us a grant of £12 000 which we would have to match by raising £12 000,and by taking out a loan for the same amount from the Co-operative Loan Fund. A committee was set up to drive the scheme forwards. Our fundraising included £10 000 in grants from Staffordhsire County Council's Rural Access to Services Partnership (RASP) and Advantage West Midlands Shareshill Parish Council granted £3000 and 244 villagers (to date) each bought one £10 share. It is not too late to buy your own single, non-transferable share. On Monday 2nd February management of the shop passed to the Community Shop. The post office side of the business was acquired on 30th April 2009. right click here to download the latest newsletter and choose "save target as..." The Community shop exists to serve the community. Any profit made after refurbishment costs will be ploughed back into community projects. Volunteers are welcome to help with this venture. The shop now has a Bra Bank so that women can give their support (apologies for the pun!) to this worthwhile campaign. |
