When threatened with the closure of the village shop in 2008, The Parish council called a public meeting. As result Shareshill acquired the first community shop in Staffordshire, with the support of The Plunkett Foundation, through its Community Owned Shop activity (formerly known as ViRSA). It was funded by grants from ViRSA and the Parish council, a loan, and the sale of £10 shares to villagers (limited to 1 share each). The Community shop is run by the community, for the community. At present it also relies upon public support and fund-raising events. Volunteers are welcome to help with this venture. In October 2010 the shop won a Regeneration Award from the South Staffordshire Partnership. In addition Councillor Bob Cope won an individual award for instigating the process and driving the project forwards. |
